Calvin
In a hot April afternoon, I together with 3000 famine heroes gathered under 30 degrees hot sun. We spent thirty hours together learning and experiencing poverty in Third World Countries. We underwent 30 hours without food. We slept on hard wood floors and cramped space. We were all in bare feet and sat under the hot sun for hours without any shade. Nonetheless, we were in high spirits because we all shared the same belief. We know that we can make a difference. Fasting for 30 hours does not translate to immediate help to the children in need, but it does raise 15 Million HK Dollars, awareness to the problem and it gives the children in need a hope.
What’s stroke me most was the average age of the participants, as most of them were teenagers. It’s encouraging to see teenagers willing to stand up for what they believe, some may argue that they were there because of the performing celebrities. Regardless of what attracted them there in the first place, they all left with a new set of values, and never undermine the changes a passionate teenager could bring.
Poverty in Third World Country is a dire issue, together we can all play a part in making the world more fair. And here’s a way to start: through World Vision, you can provide long-term support for hungry children by joining their Child Sponsorship Programme. I am now sponsoring a teenager from Ethiopia. The 30 hours famine itself will not solve the issue, but it serves as a beginning to a sustainable outreach of compassion and humanity to many hungry stricken children.
Afterthought:
I think I will go again next year. The thirty hour itself actually wasn't that difficult, they have a lot of activities (sharing what World Vision is doing, their vision, stories of some children, game experiencing life of a family in poverty), during the day to keep you occupied and you don't have much time sitting around thinking you're hungry.
